Team Building - Getting it right from Team Building Made Easy

I’m often intrigued by the comments and blogs people post about team building activities, mainly because there are quite a few that are extremely negative. I’ve seen “experts” compare team building with dragging finger nails across a black board. And yet if these comments are accurate how do we explain the countless thousands or possibly millions of people that thoroughly enjoy team building activities?

The truth is that some team building activities work and others don’t.

Team building can be used to great effect and can give people a unique, new, and fantastic experience. To achieve this there are a couple of simple things you need to do.

1.) Match the activity with your objectives. Make sure you choose an activity for the right reasons. Choose the activity that best matches your objectives and you are far more likely to create a fantastic experience.

2.) Communicate the objective. Make sure you communicate your objective to participants as early as possible. If we are there to “let of steam”, or “network”, or “try something new” then communicate that to people. This is particularly important if you have an objective that is learning oriented. A lot of people are used to highly competitive “fun” based team building activities. If you are trying to create some learning then you need to communicate that as early as possible.

3.) Match the activity to your group. Think about your group and how the activity is suited to them. Don’t match an adventurous activity with a fairly sedentary group, or networking based activities with a group that know each other really well, etc. It simply won’t work.

I think if you follow these simple steps you have a much better chance of creating a great experience. There may still be the odd activity that won’t work but the vast majority will be a fantastic experience that staff will remember and thank you for.

So the real message here is that instead of blogging negative comments (that are probably in a minority) lets have a healthier conversation about how to get it right. Now that’s something that could benefit us all.
