Hydrotherapy for knee replacement and hip replacement
Advance Rehab Centre
Physiotherapy, Rehabilitation, Arthritis
We know from many studies and our own observations in the clinic, that despite the surgery and rehabilitation, many people are left with significant loss of strength, fitness and functional limitation following their knee replacement, some even report severe pain up to 12 months following surgery.
Hydrotherapy has a number of benefits over regular land based programs in the first six weeks of recovery following major orthopaedic surgery such as a total knee replacement. Firstly, the hydrostatic pressure of the pool can be more powerful than compression stockings and assist significantly to reduce swelling and odema. Secondly, the soothing heat of a 34 degree pool and give enormous pain relief and enable more comfortable movement.
When the soft tissue healing has largely resolved at the six week mark, hydrotherapy can provide a great workout to maximise flexibility and movement in the knee as well as strength recovery. All of our hydrotherapy programs ultimately transition to land after the first few weeks following knee replacement. Each session is fully supervised by a hydrotherapy trained physiotherapist and our pool also has a hoist for those who elect for bilateral knee replacements or who cannot manage stairs.
To maximise your recovery following a knee replacement, do not delay...changes can even be made months or years after surgery with the right program. Make an appointment today and get that knee moving!
