At CARE we recognise the importance of plant energy efficiency, performance and reliability for businesses that rely on refrigeration as part of their day-to-day activities. Uncertain economic times means careful decision-making when it comes time to replace or upgrade an existing plant. With the current emphasis on energy efficiency and minimisation of operating costs, the value of good plant design and effective maintenance practices cannot be overestimated. Let’s face it. In the 70s, 80s and 90s the priorities for plant design were very different from today. Where the minimisation of capital cost was once the main driver, today (while upfront cost is still important) the wise business operator will look closely at the overall operating cost of the plant over its life cycle. Poorly performing existing plant is often found to have been badly designed and poorly commissioned at the outset with mismatched components and inadequate control strategies resulting in very inefficient operation and high operating cost. Simple modification and careful recommissioning can often lead to much improved systems performance and in many cases may postpone or avoid a costly upgrade. Refrigeration Plant is not an “off the shelf” product but should be engineered and equipment selected to match the specific application. Any additional cost arising from the design process and equipment selection will always be made up many times over by savings in operating costs over the equipment’s life. Since the implementation of the Montreal Protocol on an (almost) worldwide level the shift away from CFC to alternative refrigerants and most recently towards natural refrigerants has created a bewildering array of options when choosing a refrigerant for a particular application. The commonly used R22 HCFC refrigerant is due to be phased out by 2015 and for many applications plant replacement may be the only option. The engineering staff at CARE can help with the important design decisions and advise you as to the best course of action regarding refrigerant and equipment selection to best suit your application.
