Azuris is an island holiday home overlooking the
Coral Sea in the Whitsundays. Designed as a refuge
for relaxation and enjoying the sub-tropical weather.
The strictly modern pavilion design responds to
light, air and water. It’s primarily concerned with the ambiguity between
inside and out, public and private. The design provides cool shaded, well
ventilated spaces with relief from the intense sun.
The swimming pool occupies the entire width of the house;
it blends visually with the sea and is vital for introducing water’s cooling
and visual elements to the interior. Two lateral thick
walls shielding views from the adjoining properties and projecting site lines
to intensify views.
Projecting roofs’ create gentle transitions between
the relentless sun and the soothing interior. Walls and shading devices are
easily opened and adjusted to optimise air flow and moderate in order to reduce
the need for air-conditioning or artificial lighting.
All living areas and bedrooms enjoy the splendour
of the site’s setting. Materials were chosen to
compliment their surrounding and withstand the harsh sub-tropical environment of
high humidity, intense sun and wet season down pours. A restrained exterior and
interior palette are kept to the bare minimum.
