Azuris is designed as a three bedroom holiday home nestled on a hillside overlooking the Coral Sea on the western side of Hamilton Island with a command of its surroundings; it is on one of the most beautiful islands of the Whitsundays archipelago. Designed as a refuge from the relentless business schedule of the client and his family. Here they relax and enjoy the consistent sub-tropical weather, re-connect with the natural world and enjoy the pleasures of the senses. The design responds to three key elements of the location: light, air and water. It’s primarily concerned with the ambiguity between inside and outside, public and private assisted by the climate. To facilitate outdoor living, the design provides cool shaded, well ventilated spaces - cooling relief from the intense sun. Strictly modern in design, adopting a pavilion form with stackable sliding glass doors. Wrapping around the pavilion is an expansive pool, creating a dramatic design element, it is vital for introducing water’s cooling and visual delight to the interior. Bold in size and elevation, the pool blends visually with the sea enabling one to swim above the sea in total privacy which is provided by two lateral thick walls shielding views from the adjoining properties and by the same token projecting site lines to intensify views. The house incorporates projecting roofs’ creating gentle transitions between the relentless sun and the soothing interior. Walls and shading devices are easily opened and adjusted to optimise air flow and moderate sunlight to create a comfortable environment in order to reduce the need for air-conditioning or artificial lighting. The upper level’s Living Area not only enjoys proximity to the swimming pool and ocean views to the west, it furthermore enjoys an outdoor/ indoor environment with the Entry Courtyard which is shielded from the road by high thick stone walls. This courtyard’s stark emptiness with a reflection pond and fountain head provides the soothing resonating sound of water to this space and interior. The Master Bedroom with adjoining Bathroom and Dressing Area enjoys the proximity of the pool with expansive views of the ocean. Adjacent is a private courtyard with built-in seating capped with a concrete canopy for shading and a small reflection pond with fountain. On the lower level directly under the swimming pool are two Guest Bedrooms with framed views thanks to deep terraces providing shade from the westerly sun. Also a generously proportioned Living Area shaded throughout the day which is open to the elements and is ideal for escaping the heat whilst being closer to the vegetation and this is ideal for sunset viewing. Materials were chosen to complimenting their surrounding and withstand the harsh sub-tropical environment of high humidity, intense sun and wet season down pours. Restraint exterior palette- dark grey rendered concrete block walls, pool, roofs and floors of concrete and courtyards of local stone. Internally materials and finishes are kept to the bare minimum; predominately white rendered walls, natural concrete floors and tiled surfaces for shower recesses.
