Yoga means to unite, or yoke in Sanskrit. What we yoke is ourselves, the different parts of ourselves - our body, our mind and emotions - into a whole. Iyengar yoga gives us a way to bring purpose and meaning to our lives. To develop as an Iyengar yoga practitioner takes time, and over time there is a development of capacities both physical and mental. At first the benefits are seen physically, but, as we develop stability and flexible strength, we also grow mentally and emotionally. We start to live our lives with clarity, discerning what is helpful and what is not, developing a respect for ourselves and for others. Classes at The Yoga Centre run for 1 hour (beginners) or 1.5hours (intermediate) and follow a particular sequence of poses. Iyengar yoga utilised props to support and develop our practice and therefore is suitable for anyone of any fitness level or age.
