To make sure your child is on the track to success in their education follow these simple steps:
Routine is key to making sure that children are ready to start the day and learn. Waking up with plenty of time to get organised for school and making sure they have full bellies so that they can concentrate. These are simple tasks that can make a huge difference in a child’s school day.
Encouraging self-reliance is a life skill that they will be grateful for when they are adults. Simple things like filling their own drink bottle or taking the initiative to start their homework without being asked. Learning to do things without mum and dad helping is empowering for children and you’ll see their confidence soar.
3. Setting an example:
Show your kids that you love learning too. Read to them every night, read books in front of them (modelling reading). Make mistakes and let them know that’s ok. Watch a documentary as a family and discuss it. Play board games as a family.
4. Support the teacher:
The teacher is there to help not just your child, but you as well. Make sure that you keep the doors of communication open. Support each other and work together in educating your child. Get involved in the school and its programs. Volunteer your time (if you can). Email your teacher with concerns if you can’t make it into school. They will always take the time to respond to you.
5. Stay positive about homework:
Don’t groan when it’s time for readers in the evening. Stay light-hearted if they make a mistake with their reading, give them gentle hints rather than straight out saying “No”. Things like “Good try” or “Let’s sound it out together” are better alternatives. If you don’t understand their homework task then ask the teacher.
Ask about their day, but do it in a more fun and specific way like: What was the funniest thing that happened today? Did anyone get in trouble today? What game did you play at recess? What was the yummiest thing in your lunchbox? You’ll be surprised at how kids will open up with these sorts of questions.
Now if you have read all these steps you are already on the right path to helping your child succeed in their education. Make sure you now implement them into your daily lives. Good luck and happy parenting!
