Steps in the research process Research is a process, a series of steps which are used to define a research problem and collect and analyse data to increase our understanding of the problem. Various steps in the research process have been described and represent the overall process. They include: Identification of the research problem The literature review (to identify if the study has been carried out before?) Identification of the purpose/objectives/aims of the study Formulation of the research question/s or hypotheses Planning the study (Methodology) Research design (qualitative or quantitative approach or mixed methods approach) Sampling strategy (number of participants and how will be selected; convenience; purposive; etc) Data collection methods (eg. interviews – individual or focus group; survey questionnaire; observation; standardised measures) Data analysis (different analyses used for quantitative approach; qualitative approach) and interpretation Write up research report and disseminate the findings Comparison of research paradigms or methods Research paradigms reflect different philosophical approaches to the development of knowledge. They also reflect different value systems and impact on the type of research design to be used by the researcher, ways in which data will be collected, and ways in which the researcher will engage in the study. The following table provides a comparison of the qualitative and quantitative paradigms.
