Residential Architecture - Berner Street
Building Design, Architect, Home Design
The brief called for a substantial house on a relatively small site therefore the dwelling optimises a narrow block with an elongated T-shaped plan that opens to the street and views to the northeast.
The main floor of the house, one level above the street contains interconnected livign, kitchen and dining rooms opening to large external living areas and rear garden plus a laundry / bathroom to the rear. On the upper floor are four bedrooms, a study, bathroom and ensuite for a main bedroom. A small roof terrace over the central timber clad section of the house has barbecue facilities and allows panaramic views to the Pacific Ocean and city skyline, whilst the basement contains a four car garage, a gym, games room and storage.
The materials and finishes have been selected to compliment the exposed coastal setting with large operable glazed doors facing the main outdoor open spaces and views, and elements of weatherboard cladding over the rendered masonry plinth which breaks up the form and scale of this house on the tight site. The long western elevation is broken into three sections by the two story timber clad element. These materials are completed with a Colourbond ultra roof, maximising durability in the coastal environment.
