Wine can be more enjoyable when you drink it from a clean wine glass. Wine quality can be affected by the cleanliness of the glass and the method used in cleaning it, so it is important to consider proper techniques in maintaining and keeping wine glasses clean.

Unlike typical glassware, a wine glass is considered to be more delicate and requires appropriate cleaning and careful washing techniques. Stains and the wrong detergent can make the wine glass look unsightly and affect the overall experience of enjoying wine. These tips should help you clean wine glasses correctly and remove various types of stains from them:

  • Lipstick stains - Emollients in the lipstick allow the colour to stay on the lips, but they also make the colour stick to the glassware. Before washing, sort out the wine glasses with lipstick stains on them, then carefully and gently rub salt on to the lipstick smudges. You can proceed to wash the wine glasses once the lipstick stains come off.
If you are worried about scratching the glass, use steam from a kettle of boiling water to make the wine glass foggy, then take a paper towel to gently wipe the lipstick stain off.
  • Spots - To get rid of spots, use the steam from a kettle of boiling water and rotate the glass as you hold it over it. Make sure that all surfaces of the glass, especially the ones with spots, are steamed. Once the glass has been steamed, use a clean, soft, and lint-free cloth to wipe the moisture off. The spots should come off as you wipe the glass clean.
  • Sauces and grease - Sauces and grease can end up on the wine glass from touching and transfer from your hands, or accidental splashing when eating or serving. Get rid of them by rinsing the wine glass in hot water to remove any remaining debris and leftover wine, then dust baking soda throughout the wet wine glass and gently rub the glass with a soft cloth, focusing on greasy spots. Baking soda is abrasive, but it will not scratch the wine glass. Rinse the wine glass in hot water.
  • Hard water stains - Hard water from the tap contains high amounts of magnesium and calcium, so it leaves deposits or limescale on the surface of the glass. Apart from staining the glass, hard water can make soap scum leave a more stubborn film on the surface and make some dishwashing detergents less effective in fulfilling their purpose.

Remove hard water stains on the wine glass by steaming it and gently wiping the fog off with a soft, lint-free cloth. Alternatively, you can prevent hard water stains from not washing wine glasses directly under the tap.
