Cost Assessment of Legal Charges

We have now decided due to demand from our clients to offer our services in providing preparation and representation in Costs Assessment at the Supreme Court.  Too often law firms overcharge clients and have not been scrutinised enough.  Now client's are becoming more aware of their rights to challenge exorbitant legal bills.

Recently we were approached by a client who had been charged by a prominent well know legal firm in Sydney, to review their legal bills.  The client had been charged in excess of $40,000.00 without anything being achieved or filed for them.  The firm had run in circles without following what the client wanted or needed.  They had several people working on the client's file in order to double and triple charge for items.  The end result being a large legal bill without anything progressing or being achieved for the client.  This was neither fair nor reasonable.  Clients come to lawyers expected that lawyers are professionals with the necessary skill and expertise to guide them to achieve an outcome.  Too often lawyers become more interested in the billable hours and meeting targets rather than achieving results for the client.

We are fortunate as a law firm in that many of our matters are charged at fixed rates which we believe provides better value for out client's money.  Note we say our client's money.  As it stands it is not our money that we are spending but our client's money.  This means that we owe it to our clients to be as careful with their money as we would be with our own money.  We should provide skill, advice and direction to clients and explain to them in down to earth terms what needs to happen to achieve an outcome in their particular case.  Always the aim is to save on costs whereever possible for our clients.

Cost Assessment in available for all clients who have engaged a law firm to act for them.  If you are unsatisfied with the legal costs charged to you, it is your right to seek a review through the Supreme Court Costs Assessor.  We work closely in following and adhering to ensuring that you only ever pay fair and reasonable costs for any legal work.  If you have any doubts regarding your legal bill please contact us to discuss your concerns.  We will be happy to guide you and assist you in saving money.  We are determined to support you in every aspect of your matter and to achieving fair and reasonable costs.
