To keep the diesel clean in your boat you need to follow some simple steps: Make sure that you always refuel from a good reliable fueling station and check your fuel filters sight glass frequently to see if there are any traces of water at the bottom. If water accumulates periodically at the bottom of your filter then is possible that your fuel is water saturated (water can emulsify with fuel up to 15%) and water level is at the fuel pick-up line. At this stage you MUST at least drain the water from your tank via the drain tap.If water is allowed to stay for long periods at the bottom of your tank, microbial colonies will form on the separating layer between the water and diesel feeding on the oxygen and hydrocarbons. When dead (or are killed with biocide type fuel additives) they accumulate at the bottom of the tank as a sludge (diesel bug contamination)
