Kiama Art Gallery’s Australian Landscape 2011 exhibition celebrates the legacy of the Heidelberg cigar box painters. The owner of the gallery, Andrea Hope, thanks artist Auguste Blackman for the suggestion of holding such an exhibition in the Kiama’s newest gallery. “We were discussing Australians’ love of landscape painting and reflecting on the works of the Heidelberg artists such as Roberts, Streeton and others. “ Andrea said. These artists often created beautiful plein air impressionistic works using the top of cigar boxes as their canvas. Auguste joins with a number of other leading regional and Canberra artists in this exhibition. “In Australian landscape 2011”, Andrea said, “the artists will interpret the landscape in a modern way, so together with traditional landscapes and seascapes there will be more contemporary paintings representing our urban life. Whilst the artworks will be small, they will not all be in the 9 x 5 inch format.” Other artists exhibiting at the exhibition are Olivia Alexander, Sharon Blair, Mary-Jane Burke, Philip Cooper, John Cornwell, Kathy Karas, Jeanetta Main, Brett McGrath, Jann Parkes, Marshall Phillips, Doreen Shaw, Vivien Tanner, Judy Whitlock and Dawn Wilson. The exhibition runs through to 30 October at Kiama Art Gallery at 129 Terralong Street, Kiama. The gallery opens from Thursday to Sunday, or by appointment on 02 42324121
