Logistics & Materials Handling Mercury Awards September 2013 Konecranes has been nationally recognised for two consecutive years as the winner of the hotly contested Materials Handling Solution category of the Logistics and Materials Handling Magazine’s Mercury Awards. This year, it was for their maintenance of mature crane stock in a challenging salt air environment at Abbot Point Bulk Coal Terminal One near Bowen in Queensland. The terminal is operated by Abbot Point Bulk Coal, a subsidiary of Xstrata which recently expanded to a capacity of 50 million tonnes per year. “There are particular maintenance challenges in our location, which is on the ocean. The salty air can corrode the machinery. Also, most of our cranes have been in place for 20 plus years, so we can realistically expect more maintenance to be required,” says Mr Duncan Robertson, Maintenance Planner for Xstrata Abbot Point. The judges were impressed with Konecranes’ ability to adapt to unique and difficult circumstances. “Konecranes rose to the challenges of operating in harsh environments at Xstrata’s Abbot Point Coal Terminal in Queensland. It was great to see a materials handling company growing and adapting off the back of the mining boom,” said the judges in their comments. Every three months, Konecranes inspected the cranes and provided a defect report. If any cranes have defects that need repairing, Konecranes Technicians base themselves in nearby Bowen while completing the work, which is regularly completed within the week, minimising downtime on site. Mr Robertson understands that they can realistically expect more maintenance to be required with ageing cranes in a saline environment, and was very happy with the level of service provided by Konecranes.“We would recommend Konecranes to other companies like ours needing crane inspections and maintenance,” he said.
