Konecranes, the world's largest crane service organisation, is in the process of introducing an advanced suite of remote service technologies to Australasia, in a bid to increase safety, reliability and efficiency. The new system, TRUCONNECT provides a host of remote services ranging from periodic data reporting to real-time diagnostics, technical support and production monitoring. These new technologies give crane owners a huge advantage in being able to undertake smart planning through informed decisions that prevent downtime and optimise lifespans, while elevating cranes to a higher level of safety and efficiency. It also enables more accurate budgeting for crane maintenance and can eliminate unexpected service calls and production interruptions. The TRUCONNECT system works via collecting data from the crane through a remote connection which is then compiled into web views and customer reports which the client can access through a secure portal, which also contains historical data. Sensor arrays provide feedback on key safety aspects such as load, position, temperature of components, voltage, vibration and ambient temperature, and important safety alerts (such as overloads or overheats), can be sent via SMS or email soon after the event occurs to ensure immediate correction. Konecranes achieved NATA accreditation this year for its crane inspection programs and a change in the Australian Standards have made Konecranes' third party inspections a type of formal requirement. The standards outline the safe use of cranes and maintenance requirements and include a new section which specifies methods to monitor design duty and design working period. The new standards and the new technologies are game changers for the crane industry. Never before have operators of cranes been required to know so much about the condition, safety and traceability of maintenance of their cranes. By monitoring tens of thousands of cranes in real time, Konecranes has also been able to build the information into its periodic and ongoing inspection services and its Crane Reliability Survey (CRS).
