PACE Zenith Awards June 2012 Crane supplier Konecranes has installed 23 overhead cranes at BAE Systems’ Williamstown shipyard in Melbourne, Australia, over the past two years, helping the company fulfil its contract to build Air Warfare Destroyers for the Royal Australian Navy. The project has considerable strategic importance, with the three versatile destroyers involved not only dedicated to the defence of naval forces and assets ashore from aircraft and missile attack, but also able to operate in anti-surface, anti submarine and naval gunfire support roles. BAE Systems, the Australian arm of the UK-owned defence and aerospace giant, is carrying out block construction work on the three Hobart-class destroyers. The blocks will comprise hull machinery compartments and bow and stern sections of the ships. The complex project involves many variants of overhead cranes, including double girder types as well as chain hoists, some with special safety and efficiency features such as magnet systems and sway control. The latest of the ongoing series of Konecranes was installed near the end of 2011. As well as supplying BAE Systems with cranes, Konecranes is refurbishing existing cranes and carrying out routine monthly maintenance, managing all cranes and lifting equipment on site at Williamstown, Victoria. Konecranes has also re-certified 10 cranes in accordance with Australian Standards. The cranes are principally used for lifting steel plates, welded sections and related equipment in the manufacture of the hull blocks for the destroyers. Shayne Murray, Procurement and Sub Contracts Manager, BAE Systems, said: “We chose Konecranes as our crane supplier at the start of this project about three years ago. We selected them for their size and reputation and because they demonstrated that they could satisfy our requirements in a timely and cost-effective manner. “We’re happy with the service and support Konecranes has provided for this major project.”
