50 Marathons After 50

I started running at the age of 50 – when my youngest son advised me “Mum, life will be all down hill now”.

Well, I am about to complete my 50th Marathon (October 30th) so I think I have shown him otherwise ….

I did my first Marathon in Rotorua New Zealand, at the age of 53yrs in a time of 4 hrs 27 minutes. Whilst my times slowed over the years, I am one of a few women over the age of 70 still running full Marathons (42kms)

Running has encouraged me to travel around the world doing what I love. In 2005 (aged 69yrs) I travelled to Paris, for the infamous Paris Marathon and then completed London Marathon the next week. I then flew back to New Zealand for the Rotorua Marathon – 3 Marathons in a month! In 2006 – I celebrated turning 70 yrs by running 7 marathons in the same year.

I have made some great friends over the years and whilst I may not continue running full Marathons in the future – to complete another mile stone, I only have 8 more half marathons (21 kms) to go before I reach my 100th.

Over the years I have raced approx.. 5000 kms. This includes the various 10 km ‘official’ events both here and in New Zealand but doesn’t include the many hours of training.

As long as the body is able and with a little help from Emily– I am still keen to run for as long as I can.
