The first stage is to establish what you want to achieve through the social media platform, for example:

Once your objectives are established it's time to select the most
appropriate platform (or platforms) on which to base your strategy.
Platforms may include any of the following:

...or a number of other platforms based on your
objectives and the audience you need to reach. It is most likely that
your strategy will involve more than one of these platforms.
In this stage we apply various techniques to help attract the people you
need to target to your chosen platform. This is done by the strategic
placement of relevant content and integrating 'online' and 'offline'
activities into your social media activities.
Once you have built the fan base you wish to target, it is important to
have a strategy to maintain their interest so you can leverage the
connections you have made over time. This means continuing to provide
interesting and relevant content and encouraging ongoing interaction.
As with any other marketing activity it is important to be able to
measure your progress against your initial objectives, and to be able to
fine tune the plan accordingly.
