As part of the SCG’s current redevelopment the oval has been lengthened to 155m to better accommodate AFL. This upgrade meant it was time for new goal posts and barrier netting systems to be installed and PILA group are proud to have been chosen for the job. The SCG’s Head Curator, Tom Parker, and PILA’s Reece Wooldridge have known each other since Tom started at the SCG in the late 90’s. Tom was familiar with PILA’s products and experience as well as our hands-on from the top philosophy, and this long-standing relationship coupled with the most competitive quote provided resulted in us securing the job. Exact Specifications for Goal Posts The SCG required their goal posts to have a 125mm diameter to match the MCG’s AFL goal posts. PILA custom engineered the posts to the SCG and AFL’s exact specifications and was able to accommodate the required diameter while keeping the posts light and easy to handle, a key requirement for Work Health & Safety manual handling standards. Barrier Netting Challenge Barrier netting behind the goal posts is used to protect the crowd from flying balls during warm-up. Since teams move swiftly from warm-up to huddle to play, this barrier netting needs to come down quickly before the match, and the SCG grounds staff are given only 3 minutes to achieve this. Reece was thrilled to recount that “in time trials held by PILA group’s team and SCG grounds staff, the nets were dropped and poles unbolted and lowered in just 90 seconds!” Working Within a Tight Timeframe Timing was the biggest obstacle with the window of opportunity squeezed between Major League Baseball, NRL and AFL games. The footings and base fittings for the goal posts needed to be installed in a tight timeframe, with the job and clean-up done in just 2 ½ days, including re-engineering the southern end footings from the old site board and boundary fence. Reece and his team didn’t compromise on attention to detail taking all care to leave no footprint of their having been there. With this done the Major League Baseball went ahead uninterrupted in late March. Next the Rabbitohs and Dragons went head-to-head on Saturday 5 April leaving just over a week before the Swans needed the ground for their match against North Melbourne. PILA were back in and by 9am Tuesday 8 April the posts were up and the job completed with an hour to spare before the Swans ran out to train. PILA group is the preferred supplier of AFL goal posts to all national AFL associations, offering the highest standards for products and service along with the best prices.
