I read most days about ‘digital disruption’ in this industry and that. How technology is improving the customer experience. This is great and for the transport industry, well overdue. There is still resistance from transport companies though. As a consultant, I see this regularly. The question is why is it that transport companies do not embrace technology? Is it the set up costs? The perceived slow or no ROI? Can it be fear of change or a bad case of technophobia? Or is it the old ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ mentality? One extra theory I have is that all this talk of technology seems to point to only the customer benefiting. Their ‘customer experience’ will be greatly improved and their service demands will be met. Fantastic! For a company to improve their customer experience this is great news, but technology will do more. Yes, most solutions are aimed at the transport company directly, with their customers indirectly benefiting from the company embracing these new solutions. With rising costs and shrinking margins it is tough running a transport business.
