CENELEC SIL3 Safety Server

Safety, En50155, Rail Computer,
OEM Technology Solutions was awarded a contract by Lockheed Martin to assist in the specification, design, manufacture, testing and supply of an Authority Management Server (AMS) “SIL3 Safety Server” for the ARTC’s Advanced Train Management System (ATMS) programme.
OEM Technology Solutions in collaboration with their principal supplier MEN Mikro GmbH designed a SIL3 (Safety Integrity Level) compliant Safety Server for Australian rail conditions and in accordance with ARTC specific requirements, CENELEC SIL 3, EN50155, and ACMA C-tick.
This particular solution is based around a Safety Server which is an implementation of a typical, ‘2-out-of-3’ system which has three independent CPUs with identical I/O functions using independent backplanes and redundant power supplies. At least two of the three on board computers must yield identical results to guarantee the correct operation of the complete system. Along with the Safety Server is the Application Server that has redundant single board computers with RAID 1 hard disks, independent backplanes and redundant power supplies. Communications redundancy is provided via a pair of mirrored network switches. Separate redundant power supplies are provided for the safety and application servers.
By adopting the PICMG CompactPCI (CPCI) standard for the hardware elements a great deal of flexibility and future proofing has been provided in the design.
The Safety Server is made up of the following elements supplied by MEN Mikro:
• a 19” rack mountable CPCI chassis;
• redundant backplane segments;
• redundant power supplies;
• dual D602 triple redundant PowerPC CPCI single board computers (certifiable up to SIL4) with P511 PMC Ethernet controllers;
• dual redundant F19P Intel Core Duo single board computers;
• dual redundant F301 Ethernet Switches;
• dual redundant D203 M-module Carrier and M66 I/O modules;
• dual redundant G501 HDD carriers with 2.5” SATA HDD’s.
