A BRIEF HISTORY Richie Robinson is one of only a small handful of working Australian guitarists to make it as an independent full-time performer. In his youth Richie made the decision to not join the Australian Defense Force or the Police Force, or to become a school music teacher to gain full-time musician status. He chose instead to be an independent, which meant that he was not protected by dismissal laws or job security. In the spirit of true independence, Richie also chose not to attach himself to a "name" performer, or make a "name" by association. Richie simply chose to perform professionally every single time in order to work week-to-week under his own terms, and through dedication to learning, development, and a passion for music he maintained his professional capacity; performing up to 40 hours a week on-stage for decades. In the process he discovered a great many differences between the requirements of educational institutions in order to pass music exams, the requirements of adhering to a hierarchy with performance in the forces, and the real world of actually playing for a living because the audience has asked you back. In 2007, after almost 35 years full-time performance Richie chose to take all his experience, slow down and go beyond just having one or two close students to make teaching a regular part of his life. At this time the Australian Army Band Adelaide created a job position for Richie and this time he did join up, providing the ADF with decades of professional experience in the bargain. He is now their very first and only dedicated guitarist. These days Richie travels regularly as a performer to various parts of Australia with the band as well as maintaining his regular civilian solo and band work around South Australia. Richie's teaching method is the Creative Cycle Method; a system he has developed as a result of his real-world performance experience. It unifies many of differences between styles, making learning easier and communication of musical ideas simpler for students, teachers, and musicians. The system also stimulates confidence and creativity while keeping the negatives of educational institutions such as competition and pressure, and the rigidity of learning in the forces at bay by motivating students with consistency, variety and enjoyment. Now, as one of the most employed guitar performers in the history of South Australia, Richie's fee is significantly higher than most local teachers, and rightly so. His style and method will suit students who wish to go beyond rote learning to understand the real world of professional performance and how it works.
