Radon-222 in Solution Analysis
Latest news from Western Radiation Services
08-Dec-2008
Radon-222 is a radioactive Noble Gas that is undetectable by smell, colour or taste and is highly soluble in water. Radon-222 has a half-life of 3.8 days and decays through the emission of Alpha particles, which when ingested can cause cellular damage leading to cancer.
Western Radiation Services offers a Radon-222 in Solution analysis to determine the radioactivity of water due to the presence of Radon Gas. The minimum quantity of sample required for this procedure is 400ml and the sample must be sent to Western Radiation Services within 3 days to minimise the decay time of the sample before analysis.
The Radon-222 gas is de-emanated from the water sample using Helium as a carrier gas and is collected first in a charcoal trap and transferred carefully to a scintillation cell for counting by a photomultiplier.
The De-emanation apparatus is regularly calibrated by the de-emanation of Radon from a certified Radium standard in solution.
