Gross Alpha/Beta Analysis of Water

Potable Water is analysed for Gross Alpha/Beta activity to determine
radiation levels. Advice is provided as to the safety of the water for
drinking with reference to the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.
The Gross Beta component of the results of the analysis are corrected
for Potassium content. The minimum quantity of water required for
Gross Alpha/Beta analysis is 1000ml. (1L).
The sample is first evaporated onto a stainless steel planchette,
before counting on a Gas Proportional Counter for Alpha and Beta
activity. Calibration is done by certified standard sources of
Americium-241 for Alpha activity and Strontium-90 for Beta activity.
