”The longest night of the year on June 21st brings a beautiful message of hope to all of us for the light survives to be born again at sunrise. It marks a time to look into the shadow side of ourselves as a way towards illumination,” says Danae, the SpellBox Witch of Melbourne. “Ancient Egyptians held ceremonies during the Solstice. And more than 4,000 years ago in Ireland, people built a tomb designed to let in light only during the Winter Solstice.”

Winter Solstice is the season of light and dark, chaos and order, upheaval and stability, despair and hope, sorrow and joy … it is the season of change. It is a time to look deep inside the darkness, into the unknown and find new hope and a new light.

Says Danae; ”There’s great beauty in mystery and the dark of night. The Solstice is a time to acknowledge the turning of the wheel of the year and the changing of the seasons. The burning of candles on the night of the 21st symbolizes the victory of light over darkness.”

Essential to all Winter Solstice celebrations is light - in times past this was hearth fire, bonfire, and candles. Light and its consequential heat, were imperative to survival in the winter months. Light and fire also symbolized the return of the sun and a return to the glorious days of spring, summer, harvests and times of abundance.

Winter Solstice magical colours include orange, yellow and red. Danae suggests a beautiful herbal incense blend to burn at this time is frankincense, orange peel, clove, cinnamon, rosemary and pine.

Celebrate the Winter Solstice during June at The SpellBox Shop in the historic Royal Arcade and SpellBox; the Witch’s House in Little Bourke Street, an enchanting magical spell and herbal dispensary in Melbourne’s CBD.
