Sensational new Bush Retreat Opens in Mudgee for the First Time
Latest news from Ruwenzori
05-Oct-2005
NSWs most exciting and unusual holiday retreat will open outside of Mudgee in October to groups of up to 12 people, with overnight prices starting from just $50 per person. Named after a mountain range in Africa, Ruwenzori (pronounced roowenzori) is the product of 25 years painstaking restoration and renovations by well-known TV actor, presenter and avid rail enthusiast Scott McGregor. Scott and his wife Wendy have created a luxurious railway-themed weekend hideaway just outside the food and wine-lover's paradise of Mudgee, just three-and-a-half hours drive from Sydney, set in picturesque, dramatic country perched high on the Great Dividing range. This very special retreat has been featured in segments in Better Homes and Gardens and the recent railway travel series Down The Line with Scott McGregor on the Seven Network. Scotts has passionately built up a collection of superbly appointed, Orient-Express style train carriages and other facilities in the retreat and now it is open to groups, couples and families who can enjoy a truly unique mid-week or weekend getaway. Up to 12 guests are provided with magnificent self-contained accommodation in three fully renovated antique railway carriages, featuring fully equipped dining and sleeping cars dating back to 1890, complete with Queen sized beds, marble bathrooms, original sleeping bunks for children and lounge areas. Each of the magnificent carriages enjoys panoramic views of the foothills and valleys surrounding Mudgee, one of NSWs most picturesque towns and districts. Other features of the retreat include under-floor heating, DVD and CD players, TVs, dishwasher, microwave and fully-sized ovens, as well as wood fires, telescopes and even hairdryers! The retreats 100 year old carriages still have many of their original features like polished cedar paneling, pressed metal ceilings, brass and silver fittings, while outside there is an array of railway memorabilia and cottage style gardens and 25 hectares of bushland where adults can relax and children can play and explore. Energetic guests can enjoy a number of bushwalking trails around the property. The retreat is available only as a single-hire so guests won't be sharing with anyone else and will have total peace and privacy. Apart from exploring the superb bushland and taking in the magnificent views, guests can visit the nearby historic gold town of Gulgong, numerous award-winning local wineries, historic villages, art and craft galleries, restaurants, cafes, golf courses and tennis courts in the area.
