Bachelor of Business (Entrepreneurship) students Campbell King, 22, of South Yarra, and Valjean Boynton, 23, of Kew, won the $25,000 RMIT University top prize at this year’s RMIT University Business Plan Competition. The students came up with their idea for Kegs on Legs (www.kegsonlegs.com.au), a home delivery beverage service, in 2004, after studying business ventures in the first year of their degree. The business is run out of a warehouse in Port Melbourne. “I had been toying with the idea of delivering pub-quality draught beer to a client’s doorstep with minimum fuss and waste,” Mr King said. He said working on a class assignment to launch a new business prompted the pair to put their savings together and give their idea a crack. The duo secured a serious customer base for their university project after word spread about their concept for easy-to-pour cold pots on tap with no discarded stubbies, with the kegs installed and picked up at no extra charge. “The business idea took off after we started receiving a huge demand from our families and friends and then from people we didn’t even know,” Mr King said. Mr Boynton, who looks after the marketing side of Kegs on Legs, said he had been promoting the business through radio advertising, SMS messaging, a website, event sponsorship, promotions and tours. “The business has enjoyed continued success over the past two years, with good profits and rapid growth in Melbourne,” Mr Boynton said. “The recent AFL Grand Final weekend was one of our busiest periods, and bookings are coming in thick and fast for the Spring Racing Carnival and Christmas.” Much interest from other parts of Australia has prompted the pair to look at franchising the business. Manager of the RMIT University Business Plan Competition, Heather Mallinson, said the competition is the largest of its kind in Australia, with past winners now running successful businesses, including Design Assist Partners, Merchant Broking Services and Invarion.
