The duo were the only Australian team among 16 finalist in the QEC, an international business plan competition organised by undergraduate students of the School of Business at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario. Competitors in the QEC submitted their business plans late last year to be judged by alumni and professors at Queen’s University. Recent Bachelor of Business (Entrepreneurship) graduate, Mr King, who is completing a Masters in Professional Accounting at RMIT, said it was a wonderful opportunity to meet other young entrepreneurs from around the world. “It was a real eye-opener and showed how much bigger the world of business is on a global level,” said Mr King. “There’s a lot more money, a lot more people, and a lot more ideas floating around out there.” Mr Boynton is in his second year of the Bachelor of Business (Entrepreneurship) in the School of Management at RMIT. The trip to Canada was funded through the Jacques Nasser Scholarship in Entrepreneurship, which was set up in 2005 by the former student, who went on to become Chief Executive Officer of Ford Motor Company. The duo also received a $2,000 grant from the City of Melbourne for the Canada trip. Associate Professor Adela McMurray, Director Entrepreneurship in the School of Management, said she was thrilled with the students’ win. “Congratulations to them both for winning the Innovation Award. To have been short-listed to compete in the QEC was an outstanding achievement. But to have also come away with a win is certainly an extraordinary accomplishment at the global level,” said Associate Professor McMurray. “It’s wonderful to see Campbell’s and Valjean’s skills and talents recognised internationally by leading experts drawn from both industry and academia.” This is not the first time the students have been recognised for their entrepreneurial venture. In 2006, they won the top prize at the RMIT Business Plan Competition, worth $25,000. They also picked up the Port Phillip Business Association Young Entrepreneur Award in the 2006 Port Phillip Business Excellence Awards. Kegs on Legs , which has been a major success, looks set to expand. The students are currently in talks with Franchise Alliance about making the business replicable. “They’ve been a really good sounding board and have taught us a lot about the franchising process,” said Mr King. “They’re helping us to develop the franchise idea and to set some financial and structural goals. “We’re hoping to have something up and running for next summer.”
Every year, a handful of Australian entrepreneurs win recognition though high profile business plan competitions staged throughout Australia. Along with prestige and expectation, they gain the exposure and resources required to turn dream into reality. But, as Jodie O’Keeffe discovers, the day after a competition triumph is when the real learning begins.
