The woman behind Joolz, Airdrie Makim, knows well the shopping constraints that can be an issue, especiallyfor the country women of Australia. Having grown up on a remote cattle property in north-west Queensland, she agrees that all women love to have access to good quality shopping, even when the shops are 150km away. “We didn’t often get the chance to dress up, but when we did, we loved to make the effort to look good” she recalls, “I remember everyone always looking fabulous when they were in town for an event like the Cloncurry Show. I’ve had wonderful support from both city and country women, who have embraced the chance to access good quality jewellery through the brochure. Having a website was the obvious next step – so many people in Australia now have internet access, why not make it even easier for them to check out the latest Joolz creations?”

Growing up on the property, Airdrie was interested in making jewellery from a young age. She remembers making earrings out of all sorts of things, once creating a pair from plastic sheeting sewn into pyramids, and filled with hundreds and thousands, for a friend to wear to the local Saxby Roundup! These designs have made way for more sophisticated ones, and she now sources top quality materials from around the world to create exquisite hand-made pieces. The materials used at Joolz are almost always natural, and many designs have been put together after close consultation with clients. The materials are usually seasonally based, and her designs are always limited editions, so its difficult for others to copy her work.

“I want people to feel assured that they are getting something you won’t necessarily find anywhere else, it makes it nicely exclusive, without an enormous price-tag to match” Airdrie enthuses. “Of course I’m still sending the brochure out, but now it’s great that the women of Australia can get access to me online. I have heard from several happy customers that www.joolz.com.au was put into her favourites straight away. I love that! And of course I always love hearing back from clients who have been getting comments on the ‘joolz’ I made for them! Plus with the world wide web, I am getting enquiries from all over – Canada, the US, and England, as well as just around the corner in Melbourne! Its all very exciting!”
