Are you feeling less productive than you could be? The problem may not be with you. It could be a relationship issue. There might be a break down in the relationship between you and your workstation. When you head into work, are you ready to get things done, but as soon as you sit down at your office desk, that energy seems to drain away? Perhaps, you don’t like the space you are working in. Look around. What’s wrong with your work area? Is it just boring? Can you spice it up with some sort of decorations or other items to make it more inviting? Maybe a few family photos or reminders of your last vacation will put you in a good mood every time you look at them. Such items can improve your productivity, because they will put in your mind that each day at the desk is a day you are working towards another enjoyable vacation. Where is the closest access to sunlight? Being organic creatures, our bodies like natural light. You don’t have to sit in direct sunlight all day, but having a view of the outdoors and some access to natural lighting can boost your mood. If you are lucky, you are near a window. If so, you should consider shifting your office desk to face the window to allow you to feel the natural light coming in and regularly look outside. If you are in a cubicle or your desk is no where near a window, you should try taking natural light breaks. Get up from your desk and go to a window or take a short walk outside and take in the natural light and outside environment. You may need a little more green space in your office space. Are there any plants in your office? Plants are a simple addition that may make you feel much better throughout the work day. Plants seem to have a calming effect on people. They take a little work, but they are relatively easy to care for, and while they do need to be fed and watered, they won’t interrupt you during the workday. While you may try to take the easy way out, a plastic plant is not a replacement for the real thing. Even though it may look pretty and be much easier to maintain, needing only periodic dusting, in your mind you will know it is as inanimate as your office chair, and therefore it will do nothing for your psyche. In addition to giving you a reminder of being outside in the great outdoors, a real plant is also a producer of oxygen. That extra oxygen in the air around your desk may invigorate you throughout the day. A plant can also help you fight another threat in the office, indoor pollution. The air in your office is likely filled with everything from chemicals, to germs and dust. A plant is a natural air purifier that can clean some of those elements out of the air around your workstation. Simple changes can make all the difference in your workspace world, taking it from a place where you feel ho-hum to a place where work is humming along.
