17-Feb-2009 Corian Design Awards 2008 from Corian® Solid Surfaces

2008 proved to be a fantastic year for the Corian® Design Awards. Some outstanding designers and architects were recognised for their work on amazing projects. Choosing just one Grand Prize Winner in each category proved extremely difficult due to the excellence of the various entries.  The Judges, which included the very talented Massimo Fucci, Joseph Licciardi and Skye Vermeesch [blueandbrown], looked carefully at the virtues of the 8 designs short listed [4 in each category], eventually narrowing down the field to two for the residential category and two for the Commercial category. The  Judges then looked at each design once more and arrived at the winners based on several criteria, which included how the Corian® worked with other materials and in harmony with the overall design.  And importantly, how the many virtues of the material were utilised in the design. The Grand Prize Winners for 2008, and winners of the $2000 cash prizes are...

RESIDENTIAL GRAND PRIZE WINNER - MINOSA™
Minosa™ was awarded the title of Grand Prize Winner for their Dover Heights project.  Key features which captured the Judges was the choice of Corian® for the kitchen, where the seamless finishing of the long and wide benchtop was paramount in achieving the right look.  Furthermore, Corian® was used for its UV [stability] qualities in a kitchen which starts indoors and extends to the outdoors.  Looking to the three bathroom areas in this home, the Judges were highly impressed with the sophistication of the Minosa™ Bathroom Collection including a Double Scoop®, Scoop® and The Puddle®. The Judges felt that the vessels highlighted the beauty of Corian® in Venaro White which was thermoformed into these amazing pieces.

COMMERCIAL GRAND PRIZE WINNER - THOMAS JACOBSEN
Attention to detail is everything in design, and the Judges felt that Thomas had left no stone unturned in his quest to create something different and elegant in the Beresford Hotel project.  Corian® was used for the bathroom areas due to its hygiene qualities. The material was formed into tall, wide urinals via thermoforming. The material was bolted to the wall with highly polished chrome fittings for maximum effect. Thomas also showed off the virtues of Corian® in the informal area, where the communal tables were sculptured from large slabs of Corian® in Glacier White, each featuring a series of holes with lighting fixtures placed at the base.  Corian® was also used in the formal dining areas, where the product was chosen for unique 'reserved' notices, and beautifully designed oil vessels.
