There is hardly anything more Australian than the trusty old swag. While in the UK, the word swag is synonymous with thievery and in the US of A it is not too much different in describing promotional material, in the Australia we all know the swag as a damn-good night’s sleep. Henry Lawson even wrote a short yarn about the Aussie swag back in 1907. I bet he never expected ’em to turn into this. The Aussie Swag camper trailer mob has been building hard-floor campers for 23 years now. Manufacturing started back in 1985, and this makes them the second oldest manufacturer of hard-floor campers in Australia. With all that experience, it is no surprise that the top-of-theline Ultra camper is one impressive piece of off-road luxury, and almost nothing has been forgotten. For the $45K (plus options) price tag, you would expect it. Starting at the long drawbar to make reversing easier to the flip-out tent and easy-to-access storage, the guys at Aussie Swag have made setting up camp a relatively easy affair. From the time of arrival until the main tent is set up is easily less than five minutes. Although, with the addition of the awning and extra rooms if you choose those options, it does get fairly involved and can take up to an hour. Inside the camper is fairly basic in that there isn’t a lot of clutter. The high-density foam mattress is the most inviting feature, but there is heaps of room on the floor to eat meals or just hang out if bad weather prevents you from straying too far outside. Underneath the end of the bed, the standard 700W (or 1500W if you upgrade) sine-wave inverter and power outlets are conveniently mounted. There is also a lift-up lid, which can be accessed when the camper is either open or closed. The rear storage compartment with slide-out drawer and fireproof safe can also be opened at any time. A lot of the available space is taken up with the standard features like stainless steel swing-around kitchen, 80L Waeco fridge on a slide and the Honda EU 10i generator. Not that this is a huge drama, though, because this stuff takes up most of the room in your truck or trailer anyway. A 12V/240V hot-water shower and tap for the kitchen are also standard fare and, courtesy of the 130L water tank, it will keep you clean and hydrated for a long time. A shower room with two windows and air vent also provide ample privacy. Even though the Aussie Swag campers are luxurious, there is no compromise on off-road ability. The fully independent trailing arm suspension is designed to provide plenty of flex for a trailer and help slide over obstacles too big to roll over. The springs and shocks are from Pedders suspension, which means that any problems can be fixed almost anywhere. The Treg off-road hitch also provides plenty of flexibility. The spare wheel is tucked up under the body of the camper, which may prove to be its only off-road deficiency if it is caught up. Electronic off-road brakes are also standard. The list of optional extras is rather short for this model, but that is mostly due to the long list of standard ones. The options include annex upgrades, boat loader, spare parts bag, bike racks and upgrades to the electronics system. Can you image how jolly the swagman would be if he had to carry this one on his back? I wonder how many jumbucks he could fit in there!
