Joop Nagtegaal completed his MSc in The Netherlands and obtained his PhD from Brown University in 1973 with Prof. Prager. In 1974, he published a well-known paper on finite element analysis of incompressible materials (together with David Parks and Jim Rice). He has also published numerous papers on various other finite element related topics, including finite strain analysis, contact, element formulations and material behavior. In 197, he joined Marc Analysis as manager of their European office in The Netherlands. In 1980, he moved to the United States, where he managed Marcs development efforts. Joop joined ABAQUS in 1987, and led the development of the ABAQUS analysis codes from approximately 1993 to 2003. In this capacity, he was actively involved in almost all of the new developments in ABAQUS/Standard, and laid the theoretical groundwork for many of the more advanced features. He also actively contributed to the basis for several new developments in ABAQUS/Explicit. In 2003, Joop stepped back from his management role and became a Corporate Fellow. He is now once again actively involved in development work, with a particular focus on improving the contact capabilities in ABAQUS/Standard.
